What is powered steering?

Power steering is a system in vehicles that assists the driver in turning the steering wheel by reducing the amount of physical effort required. The system uses hydraulic or electric power to augment the force applied to the steering wheel by the driver.

Hyrdaulic Steering

In hydraulic power steering systems, a pump driven by the engine pressurizes hydraulic fluid that is directed to a power steering assist cylinder or rack and pinion. The pressurized fluid assists in turning the wheels by reducing the amount of force required to steer.

Powered Steering

In electric power steering systems, an electric motor is used to provide the assistance. The motor is controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU), which receives input from sensors that measure the driver's steering effort and vehicle speed. Power steering makes it easier for drivers to maneuver their vehicles, especially at low speeds or when parking. It also provides better control and handling by reducing the amount of effort required to turn the wheels.

How do I know if my powered steering is bad?

Here are some signs that may indicate a problem with your power steering system:

1. Difficulty steering: One of the most obvious signs of a problem with the power steering is difficulty in steering. If the steering wheel feels heavy, stiff or unresponsive, it may indicate a problem with the power steering system.

2. Strange noises: If you hear whining, groaning or other unusual noises when you turn the steering wheel, it may indicate a problem with the power steering pump or fluid.

3. Leaking power steering fluid: Power steering fluid is typically red or brown in color, and if you see any fluid leaks in the area around the power steering pump or rack and pinion, it may indicate a problem with the power steering system.

4. Steering wheel vibration: If you feel vibration in the steering wheel when driving, especially at low speeds, it may be a sign that the power steering system is not working properly.

5. Burning smell: If you notice a burning smell when you drive, it may indicate that the power steering pump is overheating due to a lack of fluid.

If you experience any of these signs, it's important to have your power steering system inspected by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible to avoid further damage to your vehicle and ensure your safety while driving.
